about

Tatvamasi's latest album differs from the previous six. The material for this 45-minute recording was selected, as the leader Grzesiek Lesiak emphasizes, out of 150 minutes of live music. This time there were no previous assumptions, just a pure improvisation of the band members and the two invited guests. It was the meeting with this pair of outstanding, creative musicians - the avant-garde singer and improviser Marta Grzywacz and the extremely original, pursuing jazz trumpeter Piotr Damasiewicz that determined the shape and the direction of the music. It sparked between Tatvamasi, Marta and Piotr in 2019, when the band invited them to their project the Third Ear Music. The title of the album, Etad Vai Tad, in Sanskrit means This is That. When improvising, anything can happen – there are no presumptions. The key to the six compositions from the album is a specific balance between fullness and emptiness, sound, and silence. Therefore, This is That, and That is This. Etad Vai Tad is very imaginative. It is full of associations referring to dreams with their surreal logic. Our music is a theatre of contradictions (...) spontaneous stories about a world that is difficult to access, distant because of its abstraction and immeasurability - emphasizes the leader. Experienced jazzmen say - forget what you've learned; one of them – Mats Gustafsson – plays the music that challenges him, as: the whole history of jazz is a fight for freedom, to improvise until you get to the pure form. Tatvamasi and their guests chose this path by creating musical afterimages (the so-called solar paintings by Władysław Strzemiński). Jazz compositions oscillate between free impro, rock sensibility, sonorism and the avant-garde of contemporary classical music. The genre labelling is not the most important factor here, but the aforementioned afterimages that create the mood and this specific spirituality. We can find all these especially in the second piece “Grawipolung”, where the splendid dialogue between Damasiewicz's trumpet and Lesiak's guitar creates an almost mystical atmosphere. There are echoes of Miles Davis and Tomasz Stańko there, as well as the soulful phrases of Albert Ayler and Don Cherry. Etad Vai Tad is a real feast for the imagination.
